Have you ever taken a leap of faith—applying for a new job, joining a group, or stepping out of your comfort zone—only to feel overwhelmed by fear and self-doubt? It's common to feel excited and brave at first, only to be met with anxiety and thoughts like, "Why did I do that? Was this a mistake?" Many people have experienced this, finding themselves stuck in a cycle of worry and uncertainty.
Recently, a discussion with friends revealed that this feeling is widespread. They, too, tried to be professional, show up strong, and meet their goals, only to question their efforts. They wondered whether their contributions were valuable and whether they should even be showing up in certain spaces.
The reality is that these doubts, often amplified by anxiety, don’t reflect true capability or worth. For anyone struggling with these feelings, here are three tips to help empower and encourage moving forward.
1. Mindfulness to Manage Anxiety
Mindfulness activities, including walking, yoga, prayer, and meditation has been a game-changer when it comes to managing anxiety. Anxiety has its own narrative, often telling us we can't do something or that we're not good enough. By practicing meditation or other mindfulness practices, it becomes possible to build resilience and sit with those uncomfortable feelings. It helps distinguish between anxiety and self, allowing for the realization that, "This is my anxiety, not me." Through this separation, it’s easier to understand why anxiety arises and manage it more effectively.
2. Professional Support
Sometimes, the next step in growth is seeking help from a professional. When feeling stuck or disappointed in a role or project, it can be beneficial to work with a therapist or counselor. Processing triggers and past experiences that contribute to these emotions helps to move beyond them. Often, the frustration of feeling undervalued stems from deeper patterns, and addressing those patterns can open up new paths to personal and professional satisfaction.
3. Clarifying Goals and Motivation
Finally, it’s essential to get clear on goals and motivations. What is the deeper "why" behind current efforts? Does the present role or project align with that purpose? It may be time to set boundaries, re-evaluate whether the job is the right fit, or explore new opportunities. Clarity around what truly matters can bring confidence and direction, allowing for more intentional choices and greater satisfaction.
For many, the goal might be to support others or contribute to meaningful work. When opportunities to fulfill that purpose seem limited, it’s worth considering a shift in focus or a new approach. Identifying and pursuing goals that align with personal values can reignite passion and help break free from feelings of stagnation.
