The holidays are often filled with long to-do lists, expectations, and traditions that may no longer serve us. While rituals can bring warmth and connection, they can also create stress and overwhelm—especially if they don’t fit your current life or values.

This year, take a moment to pause and reflect: Are there traditions that feel outdated or more like obligations than joy? Are you holding onto expectations that leave you drained?

Have Clear Expectations and Set Boundaries With Loved Ones

Start by talking with family and friends about what they are most excited for this season. Maybe no one actually enjoys the annual Christmas parade, or certain events feel more stressful than fun. Focus on the moments that truly matter, and give yourself permission to skip what doesn’t.

Give Yourself Permission

Sometimes the most meaningful gift you can give yourself is permission not to do something. Skipping an event, delegating a task, or letting go of an expectation doesn’t mean you’re being selfish—it means you’re honoring your time, energy, and joy. Holidays are more meaningful when you focus on what truly matters to you, rather than feeling obligated to do everything.

Embrace Flexibility and Keep It Simple

Holidays don’t need to be complex to be meaningful. Simple plans, intentional moments, and flexible routines can create lasting joy. Consider:

  • Buy store-bought cookies for your child’s holiday party instead of baking dozens yourself.

  • Watch your favorite holiday movie or do something that makes you happy, rather than overcommitting to every activity.

Plan Ahead to Reduce Stress

Some tasks can be done early, giving you more freedom as the season unfolds. Examples include:

  • Start deep cleaning, clearing out your pantry, or setting a holiday budget in October.

  • Break shopping into small weekly tasks—pick up the turkey or stuffing, next sides and, so on ahead of time, or shop for a few gifts each week.

  • Consider skipping exchanges or gifting traditions that don’t bring joy, like an unnecessary gift swap with friends.

Focus on What Truly Matters

The holidays are about connection, joy, and meaningful experiences. By letting go of outdated rituals, simplifying plans, and setting boundaries, you make space for traditions that align with your life and values.
