Declutter Your Mind and Your Space

Have you ever stopped to think about the "job" your possessions are doing? Dawn from The Minimal Mom introduces the idea of considering the purpose of the items in your life. Dawn says, "You hire things to do a job." For example, you might hang onto unused cleaning supplies or clothes that no longer fit. You may do this for various reasons, but it might help to ask: Should you keep it, or is it time to let it go and create more space—both physically and mentally?

This concept can go even deeper when you ask yourself: Is this item, person, or situation helping you align with your values or achieve what you want? By reframing the question this way, you can begin to let go of what no longer serves a purpose or brings meaning to your life. While this was initially meant for things, it applies to all aspects of your life.

Holding onto unnecessary items makes it harder to decide what truly matters, leading to decision fatigue, which is the sense of being overwhelmed, and prevents you from making a choice. When too many things compete for your attention, you lose sight and lack the energy to focus on what’s important. This reminds me of Greg McKeown's book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, where he explores how to "discern the vital few from the trivial many." In a world that often values quantity over quality, it’s easy to lose focus on what truly brings you joy and meaning.

For instance, you might tell yourself that buying one more thing will make life better. But in doing so, you might overlook the value already present—like spending meaningful time with loved ones, a sunset, or drinking your morning cup of coffee. Does this sound familiar? Have you ever prioritized perfection at work or sought approval at the expense of enjoying the present moment with family or friends?

Decluttering isn’t just about physical belongings, though starting there can help. When you shift your behavior, you create an opportunity to evaluate other areas of your life—like your relationships and beliefs—that may no longer align with your values or goals. Are there negative beliefs holding you back, such as “I’m not good enough” or “I must control everything or something bad will happen”? These unconscious thoughts may run your life, keeping you from being fully present, causing anxiety, fear, or stopping you from achieving what you want most.

When you let go of what no longer serves you, you create space—not just in your home but in your heart and mind. Ask yourself, "What truly matters to me?” and “What steps am I taking to prioritize those things?” By reflecting and letting go, you open the door to a life that feels more aligned and meaningful.
