Sometimes, life experiences leave us stuck in protection mode or fear. We may not even realize how deeply these experiences have shaped us. When our body senses a threat or challenge—whether real or imagined—its first instinct is to protect us. This instinct is a powerful survival skill. However, we can get stuck in this protective state, unable to feel safe. This holds us back from healthier, more fulfilling experiences.
Our bodies remember how we felt in the past. They use that memory to shape our present feelings and even our future expectations. You might not connect your current anxiety, irritability, or apprehension to your past. Instead, it feels like it’s all about what’s happening right now. We often react to what’s in front of us, but our responses are frequently rooted in past experiences. This can leave us frustrated, questioning ourselves, and wondering, "Why am I overreacting?" without realizing it’s our body’s protection at work.
Without noticing, we carry layers of tension, caution, and vigilance. These patterns helped us survive tough times. Yet, sometimes the pain has long since passed, and the armor remains. Healing invites us to notice this. It encourages us to pause, check in with ourselves, and ask: Am I safe? Can I allow myself to relax?
My Own Reminder to Let Go
I experienced this firsthand after breaking my ankle. Before the injury, I enjoyed regular massages. They helped me stay grounded and connected to my body. But after the injury, I stopped. I focused on healing and managing my pain. I didn’t feel safe enough to be touched. At first, I didn’t even realize it—it was an automatic response.
A few weeks after I began walking again, I booked a massage to address my muscle stiffness. As I lay there, I became acutely aware of the tension I was holding. It was more than just physical; it was emotional, too. I had built a cloak of protection around myself. Even though I wanted to relax, my body didn’t know how to let go.
My massage therapist gently reminded me, “Relax.” I chuckled and then realized how much I’d been carrying—not just from the injury, but from weeks of feeling unsafe. My body remembered. It wanted to protect me. But now, I needed to remind it: We are safe. We can relax. It’s okay to feel good.
An Invitation to Check In With Yourself
Maybe you can relate. Perhaps you’re still wearing that old cloak—even though the danger has passed. If so, I invite you to get curious:
Am I safe right now?
Can I allow myself to be okay?
Can I trust myself to take just one step forward?
Letting go doesn’t mean rushing or forcing yourself to “feel better.” Healing often happens slowly, one small step at a time. It’s okay to move forward with uncertainty—and to trust that you can always course-correct along the way.
Awareness creates expansion. It opens your vision to new possibilities. It shifts your energy toward feeling good instead of clinging to fear.

The Importance of Community in Healing
Healing is not just an individual journey; it’s also a collective one. When we share our experiences, we create connections that foster understanding and support. Community can be a powerful ally in your healing process.
Finding Your Tribe
Look for groups or communities that resonate with your journey. Whether it's a support group, a class, or an online forum, connecting with others can provide encouragement and insight. You’ll find that many people share similar struggles. This realization can be incredibly validating.
The Role of Shared Experiences
When we share our stories, we not only help ourselves but also others. Your experience might inspire someone else to take their first step toward healing. Remember, vulnerability is strength. It takes courage to share your journey, but the rewards can be profound.
Building a Support System
Consider who in your life can be part of your support system. Friends, family, or even a therapist can provide the encouragement you need. Don’t hesitate to reach out. It’s okay to ask for help. You are not alone in this journey.
Embracing Change
Change can be daunting, but it’s also a necessary part of healing. Embracing change means allowing yourself to grow and evolve. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring new possibilities.
The Power of Small Steps
Change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with small, manageable steps. Celebrate your progress, no matter how minor it may seem. Each step forward is a victory.
Trusting the Process
Healing is not linear. There will be ups and downs. Trust the process and be gentle with yourself. It’s okay to have setbacks. What matters is your commitment to keep moving forward.

As you embark on your healing journey, remember that you are worthy of feeling good. You have the strength to overcome past experiences and create a brighter future.
You deserve to feel safe, to trust yourself, and to heal.
